Harapan: Hadi merely concealing tolerance towards corruption

Pakatan Harapan today denied allegations from PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that the coalition comprised “non-believers and the immoral”.

In a media statement, Amanah communications director and Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad alleged that Hadi had made such a statement to conceal PAS’ own tolerance towards corruption.

“We believe Hadi made this statement to hide PAS’ true attitude towards corruption when it defends corrupt individuals and groups who have been proven guilty in court,” he said.

Khalid said that the immoral attitude of PAS as a party that uses the name of Islam to form alliances and defend perpetrators of corruption contradicts the purity of Islam in safeguarding national property and public interests.

“Islam teaches its people to hate corruption and reject the perpetrators of corruption.

“PAS should take a firmer stance in rejecting parties and party leadership that practice a culture of corruption, such as Umno.

“PAS should also reject the practice of accepting positions as a reward for support of power, as displayed during the forming of the Perikatan Nasional government, because it is also a form of corruption and immorality,” he said.

Khalid said that Harapan’s firm stance against corruption was proven in its success in bringing perpetrators in the 1MDB scandal to justice.

He added that the Harapan government established the National Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre as an agency to strengthen good governance and anti-corruption practices.

During the Pakatan Harapan administration in 2019, Malaysia improved its Corruption Perception Index score from 47 to 53 and its position from 61 to 51 out of 180 countries.

“Whereas when PAS became part of the Perikatan Nasional government in 2020, Malaysia received a lower score of 51 points and fell to 57th (rank) and now continues to plummet in 2021 after getting a score of 48 and being ranked 62 out of 180 countries involved,” he said.

Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang reiterated that the Islamist party would not form any partnership with Pakatan Harapan in the next general election, including through the so-called “big tent” approach.

According to the Marang MP, when Harapan contested the 14th general election in 2018, it had openly taken in bribe givers and bribe takers.

He claimed that Harapan had caused the relationship between multicultural society in the country to turn sour by always being negative about the country’s values and concepts compared to BN. - Mkini
