PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has slammed PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for criticising Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, stating that his comments are unwarranted.
Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil said Zahid was Umno’s elected president and had the right to speak on behalf of the party.
“If Zahid cannot speak to represent Umno, then who can?
“By Hadi’s logic, he too cannot speak on behalf of PAS,” said Isham in a Facebook post.
He added that Zahid had received the party’s mandate to speak out and make party decisions, adding that this is basic knowledge in a democratic system.
“When you insult Zahid, it means you are also insulting the majority of Umno members,” said Isham.
Earlier, Hadi had responded to Zahid’s statement that PAS only offered “shallow” political cooperation in Muafakat Nasional (MN) by claiming that the latter’s statement did not represent Umno’s views.
In a Facebook post, Zahid said there was “no need to mourn when PAS was always playing safe and was in bed with many partners”.
Zahid was responding to PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who said the two parties had never declared the demise of the MN alliance, which was forged in September 2019 when both parties were part of the federal opposition.
Isham said Hadi should be open to receiving criticism instead of insulting others by calling them names.
“Islam doesn’t teach such things, and as a so-called scholar, you should know this,” he said. - FMT
