'Is Muafakat still alive?' Muhyiddin to ask Hadi about meeting with Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that he will clarify with Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang if Umno and PAS were reviving Muafakat Nasional.

"I will meet Abdul Hadi on Monday or Tuesday and ask him what transpired in his meeting with Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"For now, parties in Perikatan Nasional are free to have their own stand but come election time, we will have to come together as one.

"I am interested to find out what transpired and if Umno agreed to revive Muafakat Nasional," said the Perikatan chairman.

Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, said this at Bersatu's sixth-anniversary celebrations at an open-air car park here on Saturday (Sept 24).

There had been talk that PAS president Abdul Hadi had met with his Umno counterpart recently to see if new life could be breathed into the dying loose cooperation between the two parties.

Muafakat Nasional is a loose cooperation between Umno and PAS formed after the last general election to strengthen the unity of Malay and Muslim political parties.

However, PAS joining the Perikatan coalition in 2020, which was then composed of Bersatu, Sabah STAR, SAPP and Gerakan, had irked Umno which had always seen Bersatu as its main Malay rival party after PAS. - Star
