Abdul Latiff Ahmad’s lawyer has sent a letter of demand to the auditors behind the forensic audit report which implicated the Bersatu minister in the littoral combat ships (LCS) project.
It was reported that the law firm Chetan Jethwani & Co, via its letter of demand dated Sept 7, demanded the auditors to retract defamatory remarks within 48 hours or face legal action and issue an apology to Latiff.
When contacted earlier today, lawyer Chetan Jethwani confirmed that his firm sent a letter of demand to Alliance IFA (M) Sdn Bhd director Prabhat Kumar.
He, however, said the auditors had yet to respond to the letter.
“We can confirm that there is a letter of demand (sent to the auditor), but we have not received a response yet,” said Chetan.
“I am not in a position to disclose the content of the letter of demand, that is confidential,” he said.
Yesterday, The Vibes reported that Latiff threatened legal proceedings against the forensic auditors if they “fail, refuse, or neglect” to respond within 48 hours from Sept 7.
“You would be aware that your statement is wholly untrue and highly defamatory to our client (Latiff), dragging our client into public scandal and odium,” Chetan was quoted as saying in the letter of demand.
“Your statement has also caused many issues within our client’s family and constituency.”
Chetan was referring to various statements made by PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli based on the forensic audit report, which was posted online following a cabinet decision to declassify it on Aug 17.
Zainab Mohd Salleh, the woman allegedly behind two offshore companies linked to the LCS project, was alleged by Rafizi to be Latiff’s second wife. The minister has refuted the allegation.
The audit report was ordered by Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation (BHIC), the parent company of Boustead Naval Shipyards (BNS), the main contractor of the LCS project.
The legal letter also demanded that Prabhat write to BHIC to correct what it claimed was inaccurate content in the forensic report.
“BHIC should not have provided the Public Accounts Committee with an incorrect report,” Chetan said. - Mkini
