Let PN’s big chiefs do pow-wow on opposition unity, says Bersatu man

Perikatan Nasional leaders, including Bersatu’s Muhyiddin Yassin (centre), PAS’ Abdul Hadi Awang and Gerakan’s Dominic Lau, at their convention on Aug 27.

PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu leader has urged the top leaders of Perikatan Nasional (PN) parties to discuss working with Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the next general election and make a collective decision on the matter.

Faiz Naáman.

Bersatu Supreme Council member Faiz Na’aman said this would be better than letting component parties announce their individual stands.

“This is to avoid confusion and miscommunication,” he told FMT when commenting on PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan’s statement that his party, a PN partner, would not collaborate with PH or any of its component parties.

Takiyuddin’s statement followed PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s call to opposition parties to consider negotiating with his coalition to take on their “common enemy”, Barisan Nasional.

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has said PH would not join forces with PN.

Faiz said statements such as those from Takiyuddin and Rafizi would “play into BN’s hands” and had “put a smile on the faces of Umno’s court cluster”.

The “court cluster” refers to the group of Umno leaders who are either on trial or have been convicted on various charges.

He said Muyhiddin’s openness to working with other parties was not an act of desperation and that PN was prepared to face the elections on its own.

Redzuan Yusof.

Another Bersatu Supreme Council member, Redzuan Yusof, said the political situation was fluid and it was too early to make decisions against working with other parties.

He told FMT he believed no single party could form the government on its own.

“So we need to look at the situation when the polls are near,” he said. “It’s important for decisions on political cooperation, be they before or after GE15, to be based on ensuring political stability,”

He said there was no call for PN to be rigid when it came to political partnerships.

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said PN was “ever ready for multi-cornered fights if need be, but it is worth exploring the option of a one-to-one fight to save the country from the cancerous kleptocracy”.

He said PAS and Bersatu needed to be on the same page. - FMT
