KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin says he will seek an explanation from the PAS leadership regarding the secret discussion between the Islamic party and Umno.
The Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman said: “We will discuss the matter at the coalition’s meeting tonight and I will ask PAS leaders, like their secretary-general, to explain the negotiations and the extent of their discussions.”
He said PN would also discuss at tonight’s meeting the strategy going into the next general election (GE15), pointing out that the plan had always been to go against Barisan Nasional.
“After that, PN will clearly state its position on the matter to dispel any doubts on our direction,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a book launch.
Asked about the decision by PAS at its muktamar recently to work with Umno, he said it would be discussed tonight at the meeting.
Earlier, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin confirmed that there had been secret discussions between the party and certain Umno leaders to ensure straight fights with Pakatan Harapan in GE15.
He said PAS was trying to drive home the point that the opposition coalition was the real enemy, not Bersatu.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan had revealed on Sept 4 that talks were held with certain Umno leaders who could persuade the party leadership to consider this.
Ties between Umno and PAS deteriorated after PAS joined Bersatu to form PN when Muhyiddin’s administration took over Putrajaya in March 2020.
While Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently said it was time for the party to move on without PAS, the Islamic party is adamant on maintaining ties. - FMT
