Najib will rise above challenges as Mandela did, says son

Former premier Najib Abdul Razak's son has compared his father’s imprisonment to that of Nelson Mandela’s experience, saying that he would rise above the challenges similar to what the South African anti-apartheid leader did.

Mohd Nizar Najib said it was perhaps God's way of elevating his father to a higher level, and he was confident that the Pekan MP will emerge better after serving his jail time.

"This is what happened to Prophet Yusuf, who was framed on a false charge and was elevated to a ministerial level in ancient Egypt, after he was released.

"The same happened to Nelson Mandela who was jailed for opposing apartheid and went on to become the South African president who reunited the country's people, upon his release.

“One thing for certain - God will not test his believers more than what they can take," Nizar (above) said during his speech at the Solidarity for Najib event in Pekan, Pahang, yesterday.

Nizar told the crowd that despite his predicament, Najib would want his supporters to rise above the challenges.

‘Others would have gone mad’

He recalled the days following BN's defeat during the 2018 general election, where many speculated that it would mark the end of Najib's political career.

"But it was not the case. Not many can rise up after being globally shamed.

"With the continuous pressure imposed by the courts, the Inland Revenue Board, and other quarters; not many can brave that.

“If others had gone through that, they would have probably gone mad or fallen into a coma for months," Nizar added.

On Aug 23, Najib was sent to jail for 12 years for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering linked to RM42 million of SRC International funds. He was also fined RM210 million as part of his sentence.

He had filed a petition for a royal pardon on Sept 2 and his status as the Pekan MP would depend on the outcome of the petition. - Mkini
