Prison Dept: 'Najib held in house' rumour untrue

The Prison Department has refuted rumours that former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak was not being held in a jail cell in serving his 12-year prison sentence for misappropriation of funds.

"This information is not true. Stop spreading it," the department said in a curt one-liner on Facebook today.

The rumour that was spread through WhatsApp recently allegedly cited an anonymous source who worked at the Kajang prison, claiming that Najib was instead placed in a house meant for "senior prison officers".

This is the second time the Prison Department has issued a statement refuting allegations that Najib was given special treatment.

A day after Najib began his jail sentence, allegations surfaced that there were special prison cells for VIPs.

This came after a photo went viral, claiming the Pekan MP was occupying a VIP room equipped with various facilities in the Kajang prison.

Najib was jailed on Aug 23 after losing his final appeal against a conviction for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

This was in relation to RM42 million from state-owned SRC International Sdn Bhd flowing into his personal bank accounts.

He was also fined RM210 million. His jail term can be extended if he fails to pay the fine.

Najib is the first former prime minister to be convicted of a crime. He faces four other criminal trials. - Mkini
