Provide updates on iPay88 breach, Annuar, BNM told

In August, payment service provider iPay88 confirmed it suffered a breach that may have compromised its users’ card data.

PETALING JAYA: DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has called on communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa to provide an update on investigations into the cybersecurity breach suffered by online payment service provider iPay88.

He said there was no progressive report on the probe by the personal data protection department (JPJD), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and CyberSecurity Malaysia.

“It has been a month and Annuar should specify what action he or the above agencies have taken so far. This data breach involves a matter of national security of our country’s finances that warrants serious attention,” he said in a statement.

Lim also urged Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to update the public on its forensic investigations into the data breach.

““BNM announced that they would be conducting forensic investigations into the data breach but the outcome of these investigations remains undisclosed,” he said.

In August, iPay88 confirmed that it suffered from a breach more than two months ago which may have compromised the card data of users.

The e-commerce firm said an investigation was initiated on May 31 and was ongoing while cybersecurity experts had been roped in to mitigate the issue, with “no further suspicious activity detected since July 20”.

Then, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil questioned why iPay88 only released information on the data breach more than two months after the incident. - FMT
