Reveal ’19 key issues’ in Thomas memoir, says MP

Subang MP Wong Chen says the government must not use the task force for a ‘fishing expedition’.

PETALING JAYA: The government must disclose 19 key issues in the memoirs of former attorney-general Tommy Thomas as highlighted by a special task force, says an MP.

Wong Chen, the PKR MP for Subang, said Thomas should also be given adequate time to prepare answers for each of the issues raised.

The task force was appointed by the government to investigate allegations of abuse of power, interference in the judiciary, politically-motivated prosecutions and other offences.

It is believed to have raised 19 issues of concern gleaned from a study of Thomas’ memoirs.

“The government needs to disclose the terms of reference of the task force and publish the findings,” Wong told FMT. “It must not use the task force as a fishing expedition or for settling political scores.”

Last week, law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the task force’s final report would be presented to the Cabinet in the “near future”.

Wong said he would support having an investigation by a bipartisan parliamentary select committee rather than rely on the findings of the task force formed by the executive.

An Umno Youth leader has also called for answers regarding the Thomas memoirs.

Federal Territories Umno information chief Wan Agyl Wan Hassan said the memoirs held “answers” to many questions on the state of law and administration of justice.

“When will the task force’s findings be presented to the Cabinet? These 19 key findings are of interest not only to the Cabinet but also to the public.

“We need to set the record straight on the serious allegations made in Thomas’ writing, but the government doesn’t seem interested in doing so,” he said. - FMT
