Rosmah Mansor has gone to the Court of Appeal to set aside her guilty verdict as well as her sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and an RM970 million fine in the corruption case linked to the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid energy project.
Her counsel, Meor Hafiz Salehan of law firm Akberdin & Co, confirmed that the wife of incarcerated former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has filed her notice of appeal this afternoon.
When contacted, the lawyer added that she has also filed an appeal to recuse trial judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan from the solar case.
Meor said the defence team is in the midst of serving copies of the notice of appeal on the prosecution.
Rosmah (above) is appealing against the Kuala Lumpur High Court verdict yesterday over three corruption charges linked to the project for 369 rural schools in Sarawak.
Zaini had convicted her over one charge of soliciting RM187.5 million and two counts of receiving RM6.5 million in bribes from Jepak Holdings Sdn Bhd’s former managing director Saidi Abang Samsuddin through her former special officer Rizal Mansor.
It was allegedly done as an inducement to help the company secure the Hybrid Photovoltaic Solar System Integrated Project and Maintenance and Operation of Genset/Diesel for 369 rural Sarawak schools.
Zaini then sentenced Rosmah to 10 years in jail and a record RM970 million fine, with an additional 30 years imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine.
However, he allowed the defence’s bid to stay the execution of the sentence, pending an appeal to the Court of Appeal.
The trial judge had also dismissed her application to recuse him from the case on grounds linked to the alleged leak of the court judgment in her case. - Mkini
