MELAKA: A link between Melaka and Sumatra will be developed with the cooperation of the private sector.
The proposed 120km link, between Telok Gong in Masjid Tanah here and Dumai in Sumatra, will involve the construction of a tunnel or bridge and take 20 years to build.
State investment, industry, entrepreneur development and cooperatives committee chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh said it would have a major impact on the economic development of both countries when completed.
“The proposal for the project has been submitted by the private sector and both countries have agreed in principle to a detailed study,” he told reporters after appearing on the “Apa Khabar YB” programme with Melakafm today.
“On the part of the state government, we brought all government agencies yesterday to visit the area where the proposed new route will be built.”
Rauf said the project would also involve building infrastructures such as traffic dispersal areas and an immigration, customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) complex.
A new industrial area measuring some 2,000ha for various industrial activities would be developed in stages in Masjid Tanah in an area covering about 2,023ha.
The development would be carried out by the Melaka Corporation and is expected to also contribute to the opening of a new town in Masjid Tanah. - FMT
