We need Umno’s help to win Selangor, say PAS delegates

Two delegates to the recently concluded PAS muktamar have called for a revival of the Muafakat Nasional alliance.

ALOR SETAR: Two PAS delegates have urged the party to revive its Muafakat Nasional alliance with Umno in order to wrest power in Selangor from Pakatan Harapan.

They said Bersatu, PAS’ partner in Perikatan Nasional, should be content with vying for only a handful of seats.

The majority of seats should be divided between PAS and Umno in view of their extensive election machinery and long political history, the two delegates said.

They continued to hold out hope for Umno and PAS to cooperate under the MN pact, whose future has been in doubt since Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi declared that it was over.

Sabak Bernam PAS chief Sallehen Mukhyi said the only way to defeat PH in Selangor was for Umno, PAS and Bersatu to unite. He said even Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar accepted this premise.

“Given a choice, we want all three (parties working together). Forget our past quarrels. Give several constituencies to Bersatu and divide the rest between Umno and PAS.

“I think we (PAS) might not even need that many seats, even Bersatu is aware of its strength,” he said, while rejecting PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin’s suggestion for the coalition to work with other parties in GE15.

The other component parties in PN are Gerakan, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP).

Sallehen is a former Selangor PAS chief and a former state executive councillor in the Pakatan Rakyat state government of 2008-2018 formed by PKR, DAP and PAS, although PAS left the coalition in 2015.

A delegate from Petaling Jaya, who wanted to be only known as Razali, agreed that cooperation among the three Malay parties would ensure at least a simple majority in Selangor.

He dismissed Zahid’s statement that Barisan Nasional would go solo as mere theatrics, pointing out that Noh himself wanted to work with Selangor PAS because of BN’s slim chances.

“Umno and PAS must collaborate if we want to win Selangor, or else none of us will win,” he said, adding that there were negotiations for Bersatu to make way for Umno in the state.

“Bersatu isn’t even strong in Selangor. For example, in our area (Petaling Jaya), they don’t have any divisions, but we are taking the initiative to help one another because we are friends.”

Pakatan Harapan won 50 of the 56 Selangor state assembly seats in the 2018 general election. The number was reduced to 40 after the PH federal government collapsed.

The opposition in Selangor currently comprises BN (five seats), Bersatu (four), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (two), Pejuang (two), PAS (one), Warisan (one) and an independent. - FMT
