We respect PAS' view, but we are ready to face BN - Bersatu Youth

Bersatu Youth will not back down if forced to face off against candidates from BN in the forthcoming 15th general election, according to its chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

Wan Fayhsal said the wing’s stand is in line with Bersatu's central leaders’ position that was communicated to Perikatan Nasional (PN) component parties, including PAS, at the coalition's recent meeting.

“We respect the opinion of PN components that hold a different view. We also agree that Pakatan Harapan is our biggest political enemy in this election.

“At the same time, if we are forced to face BN, we will not pull the handbrake and we’re prepared in all aspects including to face BN, Harapan, GTA (Gerakan Tanah Air), and Warisan,” said the deputy unity minister.

“We respect PAS’ stand but we will not budge from contesting (against BN), and if it does happen, we will fight to defend the seats that we won,” he said.

Wan Fayhsal cited the Larut and Masjid Tanah parliamentary seats as examples, where the incumbents - Hamzah Zainudin and Mas Ermieyatie Samsudin - had won in GE14 on a BN ticket but later defected to Bersatu.

He said this when asked for comments on PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan’s statement on Sept 20 that the party rejects any stand to paint BN as PN’s enemy in GE15.

Instead, Takiyuddin had reiterated PAS’ stand to pursue cooperation with all major Malay-Muslim parties in the name of uniting the ummah, a point emphasised during the party’s annual muktamar in Kedah last month, despite objections from Umno top leaders.

Meanwhile, Wan Fayhsal said Bersatu Youth will maintain its request to field candidates in 30 percent of Bersatu’s seats, with PN expected to finalise its seat distributions sometime next month.

“We leave it to the president to decide on the exact number of seats, but the party leaders have agreed to give as much opportunity for the youth and women’s wing to be fielded in winnable seats,” he said.
