Bad weather for parts of Pahang

KUANTAN: “Danger” and “severe” level continuous rain warnings have been issued for Pahang by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

It said the danger-level warning issued was for Kuantan, while the severe-level warning was for Temerloh, Maran, Bera, Pekan and Rompin – with the warnings to be regarded as active up to later today.

In the warning notice issued at 5.50am yesterday, MetMalaysia also forecast continuous rain at the alert level until today for Terengganu (Kemaman), Pahang (Lipis, Raub, Jerantut and Bentong), Negri Sembilan (Jempol) and Johor (Segamat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi), Bernama reported.

The website publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my reported that readings at three rivers in Kuantan had exceeded the danger level, namely Sungai Lembing and Sungai Kuantan in Bukit Kenau and Sungai Belat in Sri Damai.

The Kuantan Public Works Department’s Facebook page reported that Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan, near Simpang Sentoria in Gambang, had been closed to light vehicles due to flooding as at noon yesterday.

Flood warnings were also issued in the Kuantan and Rompin districts by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) following continuous heavy rain across Pahang.

It said in Kuantan, areas expected to be hit included the Sungai Kuantan basin – namely Kampung Batu 6, Kampung Sungai Caru, Kampung Panching, Kampung Pasir Kemudi and their surrounding areas.

In Rompin, the areas at risk are Kampung Perwira Jaya, Felda Selancar and the surrounding areas involving the Sungai Rompin basin.

“Floods are expected to hit the areas at 12.30pm on Monday. It can occur either earlier or later than the forecast,” DID said in a statement here yesterday.

It also said the warning was issued to enable residents, especially in areas expected to be affected by floods, to be vigilant and comply with the instructions of the authorities or flood disaster management agencies.

Meanwhile in Johor, the number of flood victims dropped to 420 people yesterday morning compared with 506 on Sunday night.

The state disaster management committee said 394 of the flood victims, involving 110 families, were still at four relief centres in Batu Pahat, while the remaining 26 people were at one centre in Segamat.

In Sabah, the number of flood victims remained at 46 people from 12 families at a relief centre in Beaufort. - Star
