Incumbent Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan will challenge Hasni Mohamad for the position of Pontian Umno division head.
Ahmad (photo above, left) told reporters in Parliament yesterday that he will be engaging in a "friendly contest" with Hasni, who has held the position for more than 20 years.
"I offer myself for the consideration of the delegates," he said.
Hasni (photo above, right) was the Pontian MP in 2004. By 2008, he was fielded as the BN candidate for the Benut state assembly constituency - one of two state constituencies that make up the Pontian parliamentary seat.
Ahmad took over as the Pontian MP in 2008. During the parliamentary elections last November, Hasni won the adjacent Simpang Renggam for BN.
Both individuals have had different trajectories - Ahmad was the deputy finance minister twice while Hasni experienced a brief stint as the Johor menteri besar.
During the Umno national leadership election on March 18, Hasni will be vying for the position of vice-president while Ahmad is aiming for a supreme council seat. - Mkini
