Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan has alleged that there are attempts to silence government critics after the authorities summoned a Perikatan Nasional lawmaker and activist.
"We were informed that an activist has been called up for questioning this afternoon.
"An MP has also been summoned by authorities for publishing content said to be inappropriate or challenging the government," the Tasek Gelugor MP told a press conference in Parliament.
He, however, declined to reveal the identity of the lawmaker.
"We are seeking legal advice on the matter," he said.
Wan Saiful (above) further claimed to have been informed of a Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) notice that summoned a "Perikatan Nasional-leaning social media activist" for questioning last month, on top of requesting access to their Facebook account.
"So, where is the truth in the minister's answer earlier that they have never used the law and government agencies for personal benefit?" he asked.
Earlier this morning, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said during Question Time that the government will not request to block any social media accounts.
Instead, Fahmi said discussions with stakeholders, including social media platforms, had explored restrictions on certain contents, rather than the individual owners.
Fahmi said a total of 197 contents, of which 101 were from TikTok, had been removed from the platforms throughout last month. - Mkini
