EC: No by-election to fill Batang Kali state seat vacancy

 

There will be no by-election to fill the Batang Kali state seat vacancy.

The Election Commission (EC) secretary Indera Ikmalrudin Ishak, in a statement today, confirmed that the commission received a notice on the vacancy from Selangor legislative assembly speaker Ng Suee Lim on Feb 21.

"According to the Second Part of the laws of the Constitution of Selangor 1959, Chapter 5 Article LXX (5), the Selangor speaker has notified the EC that there is no need to fill the contingency vacancy.

"Thus, no by-election will be held to fill the vacancy of the Batang Kali state seat in Selangor," the brief statement read.

Last week, Ng declared the Batang Kali state seat vacant, following its incumbent Harumaini Omar's absence from the assembly for more than six months without leave.

Harumaini later contested the decision and urged Ng to rescind his declaration. - Mkini
