Govt to expand TVET programme with 3 new courses - Zahid

PARLIAMENT | The government will be introducing three new courses under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, announced Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

This includes a programme called TVET Tahfiz which is intended to expand career opportunities for students in tahfiz schools.

“There are about 250,000 children in tahfiz schools who need to unravel their future in terms of career opportunities even if they memorise 30 chapters (juzuk) of the Quran,” Zahid told the Dewan Rakyat today.

The Bagan Datuk MP said the government will also implement TVET Junior, a preliminary education programme for primary students which will conduct activities during the school holidays.

The third course is the TVET Techno-entrepreneur which is based on the marketability and demand for manpower from all industries in the country, he added.

To a question from Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong) who asked if the government had plans to include input and influence from industry players in TVET programmes, Zahid said they were already in the middle of doing so.

“We are already including industry players in TVET programmes.

“In fact, tomorrow, there will be more than 10 memorandums of agreement that will be signed to include more industry players in existing TVET courses,” he added.

The deputy prime minister further outlined TVET’s success, stating that there was remarkable progress in the marketability or employability of the students under the programmes.

Zahid said the percentage of employed TVET graduates was over 97.5 percent, citing UniKL's TVET programme as an example where the employment rate of graduates was 98.4 percent.

“This means that the courses provided are in line with the demand of the employment market.

“This is also thanks to the Government-Industry TVET Coordination Body (GITC) for acting as the 'matchmaker' to the courses offered and the job opportunities available in the market,” he added. - Mkini
