MACC chief Azam Baki confirmed that the agency is calling several witnesses to facilitate an investigation into Bersatu’s bank accounts.
This is after a news report quoted sources saying that the MACC is going to call Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to have his statement recorded.
“Regarding the issue of investigation into bank accounts that belonged to a political party, MACC chief Azam Baki says the investigation is ongoing and several witnesses are being called to give their statements.
“He hopes that the public would give MACC the room to conduct our investigation and not make any speculation about this case.
“MACC will conduct its investigation professionally and in a transparent manner, without fear or favour,” said MACC in a short statement to Malaysiakini.
The agency, however, neither confirmed nor denied whether they are summoning Muhyiddin.
Earlier this evening, English daily the New Straits Times reported that the MACC is expected to call up the former prime minister to facilitate a probe into the party’s finances.
Two weeks ago, Malaysiakini reported that MACC had frozen two of Bersatu’s bank accounts to facilitate investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act.
An MACC source claimed that the account freeze was over allegations that Bersatu received contributions from some 10 contractors who received various projects when the party was running the government.
According to the source, the amount of contributions was suspected to involve more than RM300 million in total. - Mkini
