Malacca deep-sea port still a proposal, says transport minister

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the port licence issue does not arise for now for the proposed deep-sea port city offshore of the central district of Malacca.

This is because the project is still in the proposal stage and all the relevant studies are needed to be conducted before a licence can be issued, he said.

“There is no issue of an operating licence yet because this project is still in the proposal stage.

“Since there is no reclamation (for the project to start), there is no question on whether we had given out a licence or not,” Loke explained during a press conference in Putrajaya this evening.

Loke was responding to a question on the status of the port licence application for the proposed deep-sea port off Malacca Central’s shoreline.

He stressed that any proposed project is subject to the approval of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report and then only can an operation licence be considered.

On Feb 1, Malaysiakini reported that Far East (Melaka) Sdn Bhd submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report on Dec 21, 2022, proposing to build a port and cruise terminal covering 1,190 acres (481.5 hectares or 899 football fields) in the water off the Malacca Central district.

The plan is divided into two parts - the first part is to build a “Deep-sea International Multi-purpose Port” near Alai. The blueprint of the EIA report shows that a liquid and gas terminal, a bulk cargo jetty and a container wharf will be constructed at the deep-sea port.

The second part is to build a 50-acre (20.2 hectares or 37 football fields) international cruise terminal near Pulau Melaka.

The EIA shows that if the port and cruise terminal are built, the project will disrupt the marine ecology, heavily reduce the fish catch and impact Malacca's fishing industry. - Mkini
