Malaysia drops 1 rung in EIU’s democracy index

 

Malaysia is in the 40th spot in the the Economist Intelligence Unit’s democracy index 2022 compared with 39th previously, with an overall score of 7.3.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has dropped one rung in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s democracy index 2022, though its overall score remains higher than regional neighbours like Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

The report by The Economist’s research arm said Malaysia dropped to 40th place compared with 39th the previous year, with an overall score of 7.3 and classified as a “flawed democracy”.

Malaysia scored high points when it came to electoral process and pluralism, with a score of 9.58, but had a lower score for civil liberties with 5.59.

In terms of functioning government, political participation and political culture, Malaysia recorded scores of 7.86, 7.22 and 6.25, respectively.

Singapore had an overall score of 6.22, scoring particularly lower when it came to electoral process and pluralism as well as political participation.

The city-state ranked behind the Philippines, which had an overall score of 6.73, and Thailand, which notched a score of 6.67.

The report noted that Thailand made the biggest overall improvement in this year’s index, after notching a total score of 6.04 in 2021.

In Asia, only Japan, South Korea and Taiwan were deemed to be “full democracies”, with nine nations categorised as “flawed democracies”, and seven as “hybrid” or “authoritarian regimes”. - FMT
