Menu Rahmah comments: Speaker wants Kapar MP's side of the story before deciding

KUALA LUMPUR:Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul says he will make a decision on Dr Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar) once she submits a written explanation of her alleged remarks linked to the Rahmah Initiative.

Johari said he had written to Dr Halimah to get her side of the story.

"As soon as I get the answer from her, I will make a decision," he said in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Feb 22) after Dr Kelvin Yii (PH-Bandar Kuching) stood up and asked about the status of any action on her remarks.

Halimah also stood up to say that she did not utter the words "Menu Rahmah".

The Speaker then asked all parties to calm down and appealed to them to await his decision.

On Feb 21, the Bandar Kuching MP had written to the Speaker to refer Halimah to Parliament’s committee of privileges for misleading the House.

Yii also said Dr Halimah’s remarks on Feb 14 that Menu Rahmah may cause exposure to cancer, autoimmune disease, autism and among others, was deemed to be in contempt of Parliament.

"The statement is untrue and irresponsible because not only is it not based on facts and science, it can also cause misunderstanding and stigma towards the autistic and disabled community in Malaysia.

"Her statement gives a wrong impression to the public, (fuelling) stigma and the belief that autism is caused by poor care and determined by your level of income," said Yii.

On Monday (Feb 20), Dr Halimah denied saying that the Menu Rahmah could cause cancer, saying they could refer to the Feb 14 Hansard.

According to the Hansard on Feb 14, Dr Halimah, said: "Saya tidak ada masalah dengan istilah 'Rahmah' atau apa tetapi jangan sampai rakyat marhaen B40 diberikan bekalan makanan yang low quality dan mungkin juga menyebabkan mereka terdedah kepada kanser, autoimmune disease, kepada autisme dan sebagainya

(I have no issues with the term 'Rahmah', but don't give the B40 group low-quality food that may expose them to cancer, auto-immune diseases and autism, among others)." - Star
