SEREMBAN: A Negri Sembilan Pakatan Harapan (PH) top leader said Khairy Jamaluddin should consider contesting the state election in Kelantan since the sacked Umno leader has a greater chance of becoming the Kelantan menteri besar.
This was the sarcastic response from Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal's statement that Perikatan Nasional (PN) could capture PH-controlled states such as Selangor and Negri Sembilan if Khairy was allowed to contest under the PN banner in the upcoming state elections.
Aminuddin said the grass is greener for Khairy in Kelantan since the PN leader who brokered the proposal was Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, who is a member of parliament from the state.
"It is better for Khairy to contest in Kelantan, he can become the Kelantan menteri besar. Wan Ahmad Fayhsal should propose Khairy to contest in Kelantan since there is better opportunity for the latter in the state.
"The opportunity is wide open for Khairy in Kelantan since the one who made the proposal is a political leader from Kelantan," said Aminuddin, who is also the Negri Sembilan PH chairman.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal, who is the Machang MP, had said PN has the potential of capturing Selangor and Negri Sembilan if Khairy decided to join Bersatu and PN in the upcoming state election.
Citing Khairy's capabilities and popularity among the people, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal also did not discount the possibility of the former Rembau MP becoming a menteri besar in the event PN succeeded in capturing Selangor and Negri Sembilan in the state election, which is expected to be called in less than five months from now.
Aminuddin nevertheless said Negri Sembilan was ready to face any of its challengers if Khairy decided to stand as a candidate in Negri Sembilan.
"I learned that (PN in) Selangor had offered him (Khairy) to contest in the state election (in Selangor) and it looks like he is keen to stand as a candidate in the state election there.
"However, I never saw any statement suggesting that he was interested to contest in Negri Sembilan, although there are rumours that he may stand as a candidate in the state election in the state.
"He is free to decide (on his next political move) since this is a country that celebrates democracy. At this point in politics, anyone will say they can win the (state) election. I can make the same claim if I am asked if I am confident of winning the state election," Aminuddin said. - NST
