Netizens vent over 'quiet' increase in sewerage charges

Some netizens have expressed unhappiness after realising they have to pay 25 percent more for their monthly sewerage service charge.

Although the new charge was announced last year, some only found out they now have to pay RM10 monthly, up from RM8 previously.

This comes as a surprise to some, who responded to a post where a user shared a sewerage service bill.

"Inflation RM48 to RM60?! 25 percent increase?" one person tweeted.

Some are blaming previous prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the previous minister in charge of water-related matters Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

According to a Bernama report on Sept 27 last year, the then Environment and Water Ministry announced new rates for sewerage services and emptying septic tanks.

The ministry said the cabinet approved the new rates in April last year.

At the time, the ministry said the increase in charges was necessary because Indah Water Konsortium had not raised rates since 1994.

This caused cash flow problems for the national sewerage company which was struggling with increasing operating costs.

Further hikes

Although the announcement only described new rates for the domestic tariff starting either Oct 1 last year or Jan 1 this year, the federal government gazette showed rates will be increased again soon.

Beginning Jan 1, 2024, domestic premises that do not fall under the "low cost" or "village dwelling" category will be charged RM12.

This fee will increase to RM15 on Jan 1, 2026.

According to Indah Water’s Sustainability Report 2021, the company reported a pre-tax loss of RM67.6 million in 2021.

The same report stated that the Waste Services Commission (Span) conducted a public consultation exercise in November 2021 which saw "more than 80 percent out of 2,356 respondents" agreeing with the need to revise sewerage service tariffs to help the company improve services. - Mkini
