Pakatan Harapan and BN hope to be a strong opposition in Kelantan in the future, said Kelantan PKR chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Nik Nazmi (seated, far left) said the goal is to ensure a check and balance against PAS, which has enjoyed an uninterrupted rule of the state since 1990.
“Our focus is becoming a strong opposition and not replacing the current government. We know the people are sensitive to issues which sometimes the state government are not responsive to, such as wages and the economy.
“If there is strong opposition, such issues will be debated properly. That is our focus,” he said at a function in Kota Bharu last night.
During the 2018 elections, PAS won 37 out of 42 seats in the Kelantan legislative assembly. By 2022, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, of which PAS was a member, swept all 14 parliamentary seats.
Presently, BN has seven assemblypersons in the Kelantan assembly while Harapan has none.
Nik Nazmi said PKR has studied the results of the previous election and concluded that multi-cornered contests had benefitted PAS.
“PAS has been in government since 1990. Therefore, Harapan and BN need to come up with a good strategy for the next state election,” he said.
He added that informal discussions with the Kelantan Umno leadership have already begun. - Mkini
