Over 120k new migrant worker arrivals since Jan 17 - Saifuddin

PARLIAMENT | Malaysia has recorded 123,368 new migrant worker arrivals from Jan 17 to date under the Labour Recalibration Programme 2.0 (RTK 2.0), according to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

While noting an increasing number of arrivals to meet demands from employers in critical sectors, Saifuddin said the number is still far from the targeted 500,000 new hires.

"Our change in (hiring) policy is working.

"Even though it’s not enough yet, we are expecting a further increase in arrivals by March, April and May," he said in response to Johari Abdul Ghani (BN-Titiwangsa).

He said the arrival numbers are part of 380,000 applications received from employers so far, including to legalise undocumented workers already here.

Previously, Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar said the plan to relax conditions on migrant worker recruitment covers the manufacturing, construction, plantations, agriculture, and services (restaurants only) sectors and sub-sectors.

Malaysia, through the Home Ministry and the Human Resources Ministry, has since increased efforts to engage governments of migrant workers source countries - including Bangladesh, Nepal, and Indonesia - on expediting recruitment and placement procedures.

Among issues at stake include efforts to reduce related hiring costs, minimum wage and workers’ protection. - Mkini
