Perak PAS chief apologised to Anwar to 'save PM's name', says son

The son of Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria has defended the latter's apology to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, saying it was done to "save the premier's name".

According to Muhammad Rif'aat, both Razman (above) and Anwar agreed to settle the case outside court and was not a one-sided settlement as reported.

"If the case was prolonged, a lot more dirt would have been unearthed.

"Because Anwar has previous convictions and sentence (sic), both sides agree for the case to be closed, to save Anwar's name as the PM. [The case is] settled," Rif'aat, who is Lenggong PAS Youth chief, said on Facebook yesterday.

He was responding to a netizen who had shared screenshots of Razman's initial refusal to apologise to Anwar, and subsequent apology, on his Facebook wall.

Not surprisingly, netizens ridiculed Rif'aat's "ridiculous spin" on the matter, and advised him to urge his father to stop slandering others.

Yesterday, Razman, who is also Gunong Semanggol assemblyperson, apologised to Anwar at the Taiping High Court for claiming during an election campaign last year that the latter condoned LGBT practices.

According to Anwar's lawyer SN Nair, the apology was part of a settlement agreement between Razman and his client. Razman also undertook never to repeat such claims in the future.

The apology came after Anwar, who is also Tambun MP, issued a letter of demand to Razman seeking RM5 million in damages and a public apology over claims that the former had an LGBT agenda and was a DAP puppet.

When contacted, Nair said his team was "aware" of, and was monitoring Rif'aat's comments.

His team is also liaising with Razman's legal team on the matter, he told Malaysiakini. - Mkini
