Popularity alone won't ensure KJ's win in S'elangor polls - state Umno chief

 

Khairy Jamaluddin should be careful before offering to run in the Selangor state polls as popularity alone will not ensure him a victory.

According to state Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, it was because Selangor folk are "dynamic voters" who do not choose candidates based on their personality or party.

"The situation is fluid and can change at any time, especially by the middle of the year when the state election is expected to be held.

"No one can expect what will happen tomorrow or the day after, and that would surely influence the voters' mindset when polling day comes," Megat Zulkarnain was quoted as telling Utusan Malaysia.

He cited BN/Umno's win in previous by-elections, state elections, and its subsequent thrashing at the national polls as an example.

'Khairy free to chart political future'

"History has shown - [we won] seven consecutive by-elections (including Semenyih), and two state elections with a huge majority, but lost in the 15th general election (GE15).

"The situation is dynamic. It depends on the voters' preference at the time of polling. What will happen in the next three or four months, no one can predict."

However, Megat Zulkarnain stressed that Khairy (above) is free to chart his own political narrative following his loss in the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat in GE15 and subsequent sacking from Umno.

It was recently reported that Khairy was mulling offers to run for public office in Selangor, including that of menteri besar.

The former health minister is also being poached by Negeri Sembilan Bersatu, which said they are willing to offer the MB position to Khairy if he decides to contest in the state polls under the party's logo.
