QuickCheck: Is the world’s largest roundabout in Malaysia?

OVER the years, many have said in print and online that Malaysia has the largest roundabout in the world. Is this true?

Verdict:

TRUE

What measures 3.4km in circumference, is nearly 500 meters in diameter and is joined by 15 entry/exit points?

The Putrajaya Roundabout.

The roundabout is located in the heart of the city of Putrajaya, the administrative capital of Malaysia. It was opened in 2003 and was designed by renowned Malaysian architect, Hijjas Kasturi.

It is a unique engineering feat, as it was built with a large artificial lake in the center. This lake is connected to a canal which winds its way through the city and empties into Putrajaya Lake.

The name of the road forming the roundabout is Persiaran Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, and within its centre is the Istana Melawati, the Putra Perdana Landmark and a five-star hotel.

The Putrajaya Roundabout is a major junction for commuters and is the main access point to the city's major attractions.

It is considered an impressive feat of modern engineering, and a testament to the nation's commitment to developing its cities.

The government of Trinidad and Tobago had disputed the Putrajaya Roundabout's title, claiming that its Queen's Park Savannah should hold the title.

However, while many have suggested that while the park's 2.3-mile (3.7km) circumference is indeed longer than the Putrajaya Roundabout, the savannah does not really count as a roundabout at all as its shape is more of an "L" than round or oval. - Star
