Racism belts bad tune at AR Rahman concert, Rafidah fumes

There is no place in this nation for those who belittle a racial group or race, said former minister Rafidah Aziz.

On the same note, she said there is no room for “feelings or assumptions of being superior over others”.

“We must understand our diversities, respect and accept them as well as accept the global diversity of humans,” she told Malaysiakini.

“An ‘influencer’ should be for good, harmony and unity. Not to trigger disrespect and feelings of hatred. It is appalling.

“The same goes for her (national hockey player)... There is absolutely no room for elements of racism in our Malaysian society,” she added.

Rafidah was commenting on a social media influencer, known as Amyra, and national hockey player Hanis Nadiah Onn’s controversial postings.

Their comments were related to the “AR Rahman: Secret of Success Live in Malaysia 2023” concert at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend.

Famed Malaysian singer Siti Nurhaliza also rendered a Tamil song at the Oscar winner’s concert, which was attended by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Amyra, who was also present at the concert, wrote that she felt “dizzy listening to keling songs” and wanted “Hindustani” numbers.

Following backlash, the influencer, with 118,000 followers, apologised and claimed that she “did not intend to hurt the feelings of others, especially her Indian friends”.

On the other hand, the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) said it would investigate Hanis over her remark.

When her posting courted flak, the 26-year-old athlete apologised, saying since her involvement in the sport of hockey over the past decade, she was “surrounded by friends of all races who fought for Malaysia”. - Mkini
