PETALING JAYA: The government has agreed to legalise the sale of fireworks and firecrackers in a bid to end the smuggling of such products, local government development minister Nga Kor Ming revealed.
The policy would come into effect from April onwards, in time for the Hari Raya celebrations, the New Straits Times reported.
Licences must now be obtained from the home ministry for the import of fireworks and firecrackers, which would be subject to import duties as well as guidelines and regulations, the report said.
Nga said “hundreds of millions of ringgit could be collected from import duties”.
Nga said syndicates had been reaping profits from the sale of these smuggled fireworks and firecrackers. “We want to control it at source. Smugglers bring them in and there are no safety standards, and we see accidents.”
Nga said guidelines and regulations on licence applications would be set by the home ministry, while the amount of duty to be collected would be set by the finance ministry. - FMT
