PETALING JAYA: A senior police officer with a Datukship is among seven individuals who have been charged over the murder of a man in Tawau, Sabah, on Jan 13.

According to Daily Express, Mat Zaki Zain was charged with conspiring with six others, including five policemen, to kill Nurman Bakaratu, 61, in an oil palm plantation near Jalan Apas at Batu 5, in Tawau, between 7.30pm and 9pm on Jan 13.

The five policemen – Rosdi Rastam, Dennis Enit, Fabian Rungam, Khairul Azman Bakar and Azlan Sakaran – and a civilian, Vivien Fabian, were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty, if convicted.

Meanwhile, Mat Zaki was charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code for abetment, read with Section 302, reported Harian Metro.

No plea was recorded before magistrate Dzukl Elmy Yunus as the case will be heard by a High Court. The court set April 11 for case mention.

In 2020, Mat Zaki was appointed the chief of staff of the Sabah Eastern Zone Security Command’s (ESSCom) intelligence division, and made a senior assistant commissioner of police.

Prior to that, he was ESSCom’s deputy intelligence chief and an assistant commissioner of police.

On Jan 31, Sabah police commissioner Idris Abdullah said the victim’s wife, Nurima Juli, had been charged at the Tawau magistrates’ court on Jan 30 for murder. - FMT
