Bersatu Youth has proposed for the government to set a minimum allowance law for interns working in the private sector.
This comes after Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) president Syed Hussain Syed Husman voiced opposition to it.
Bersatu Youth exco Harris Idaham Rashid has urged the government to enact a law that would compel employers to pay allowances to interns.
“This is to ensure youths do not become ‘unskilled labours’ in their own country,” he said in a statement today.
“We should be aware that interns also have to bear the cost to go to their offices, like other employees.
“Private companies profit from the workforce, including interns. The companies also save a significant amount by hiring interns.
“Therefore, it’s only appropriate for the government to make it compulsory for a minimum allowance to be given (to interns).”
Harris stressed that there is no room for companies to obtain free services from their employees.
Therefore, he said negotiations between the government and stakeholders must be carried out as soon as possible to reach a final decision on this matter.
Previously, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the cabinet will discuss a suggestion to compel the private sector to pay allowances to students undergoing industrial training.
Yeoh was reported as saying by The Star that there was a need to discuss the matter with the Higher Education Ministry and Human Resources Ministry on the pros and cons of implementing the proposal, which had been carried out in the public sector.
Although it isn’t compulsory for private companies to pay allowances to students who are undergoing industrial training, she said that companies in the private sector are strongly encouraged to introduce such allowances.
