PETALING JAYA: Providing first-hand feedback and insights into economic challenges faced by the country will be the main task of a team set up to advise Anwar Ibrahim in his capacity as finance minister.
Economist Yeah Kim Leng, a member of the team announced by the prime minister last night, said “it is an exciting time for our economy and to be in the position to provide feedback”.
The five-member team will be led by former Petronas CEO Hassan Marican. Its other members are FVSB executive chairman Ahmad Fuad Ali, Sarawak Energy Bhd chairman Abdul Hamed Sapawi and economist Rajah Rasiah.
Yeah said the main challenge for the team is to lead Malaysia through the global economic crisis, as well as the post-Covid-19 situation and climate change.
“The challenge is not just policy, but implementation. This is where we can focus our attention, with a multi-pronged approach to development for the long and short term.
“The team can provide rounded and sound policy advice to tackle all these problems,” he told FMT.
He said their first meeting will be held next week.
Meanwhile, Rajah said his appointment would give him an opportunity to put his suggestions into action.
“(It’s) time to deliver what I can, to translate passion into action if given the space,” he told FMT. - FMT
