PETALING JAYA: Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan has accused the government of “delaying” the tabling of the Political Financing Act under the guise of needing time to engage with its allies within the unity government as well as other stakeholders.
In a Facebook post, the former Bersatu information chief said Putrajaya’s “excuse” that it wants the legislation to be inclusive and comprehensive was questionable.
Wan Saiful said the parties which comprise the unity government are well-established and have already been engaged on the draft bill.
“The Political Financing Act is one of the easiest bills to be presented in Parliament since a draft bill has already been prepared and studies on it were completed long ago.
“The government only needs to add one clause regarding the allocation (of funds).”
He was responding to a written reply dated May 25 by law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said to his queries on the proposed new law, including constituency allocations.
Azalina said policy changes concerning the proposed law must first be agreed to by the Cabinet.
She also said fresh engagement with political parties and other stakeholders was necessary given the political developments that followed the last general election, including the formation of new political alliances.
Wan Saiful went on to call on all quarters, especially NGOs who have been advocating for the Act, to exert stronger pressure on the government in order to achieve their objectives.
“Without continuous pressure, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will keep forgetting his promises,” he said. - FMT
