PETALING JAYA: Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin says forming a new political party is also an option for his political comeback.
“If we get a second political start, why not start it on our terms (forming a new party), because if we enter any house (political party), we need to adapt ourselves to the customs of that house,” Khairy said in an episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast.
During his time in Umno, he said, he had to adjust to the party’s customs, although he does not regret joining the party.
Khairy said forming a new political party can offer fulfilment as he may be able to shape the party as he wishes, despite challenges faced by new parties such as Pejuang, whose candidates all lost their deposits in the last general election.
However, he also acknowledged the reality of a new party, saying he needed to be prepared to lose elections, but the idea of winning an election with a new party was still possible.
“If you set up a new political party, you can go the way of Pejuang, losing deposits (and) people laughing at you, but maybe you will feel more fulfilled because you did it on your own terms,” said the former Rembau MP.
After the last general election, Khairy was sacked by Umno together with former Tanjung Karang MP Noh Omar for breaching party discipline during the 15th general election.
Since his removal from Umno, his future remains a mystery to political observers.
Even though he received an offer to join Bersatu as a Supreme Council member by its president, Muhyiddin Yassin, Khairy said he still needed time to decide.
Previously, he had also joked with former DAP leader Ong Kian Ming about forming a party together, while Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said he should form his own party to attract youths. - FMT
