‘Isa’s comeback nothing to do with contesting state polls’

Negeri Sembilan Umno is unlikely to see the return of former state menteri besar Isa Samad as a candidate in the upcoming state elections.

Instead, Negeri Sembilan Umno chief Jalaluddin Alias reportedly said that Isa (above), who recently re-joined the party, would be using his experience to support younger candidates and a new line-up of Umno leaders.

"Isa knows that many others must (be given the chance to) continue serving as Umno leaders.

"Now is the right time for him to support all the young leaders (in the party),” Jalaluddin was quoted as saying by online portal Free Malaysia Today.

Jalaluddin also said Isa, who held the Negeri Sembilan menteri besar’s post for 22 years, was a political veteran who advocated for the rejuvenation of the party.

The former Felda chairperson also briefly served as a federal territories minister from 2004 until 2005.

He left Umno in 2018 to contest as an independent candidate in the Port Dickson parliamentary by-election. He came third in the seven-cornered contest with 4,230 votes.

In an interview with Utusan Malaysia yesterday, Isa revealed that he is currently assisting Jalaluddin in providing clarity to party members regarding their ties with DAP.

He explained that a significant part of this task involves ensuring Umno and the coalition government achieve a victory in the state election. - Mkini
