KUALA LUMPUR: The King and Queen have sent birthday greetings to 100-year-old Kamala Das, whose recent heartwarming story about love and sacrifice captivated many.
They are the first Malaysian royal couple to proffer formal birthday wishes to a commoner who has reached the age of 100 years.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah expressed their joy that Kamala was blessed with good health and longevity.
Sultan Abdullah said he was happy that Kamala’s special day fell on the same day as his official birthday on Monday.
He took the opportunity to extend his congratulations to Malaysians who also celebrated their 100th birthday this year.
The King said he prayed that they will always be blessed with peace and well-being, and be protected by God.
He advised the people to respect their grandparents, mothers and fathers, and to appreciate the service and sacrifice of those who have nurtured, guided and educated them.
“Be kind and devoted to them, sincerely and lovingly,” read his message that was posted on Istana Negara’s Instagram account and Facebook page.
Upon receiving the congratulatory gesture, Kamala kept asking: “How come! how come! the Agong knows of my 100th birthday?”
She said she was honoured that they thought of her, adding that “may God bless our dear Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong”.
Her son, George, said it was an extraordinary act of regal affection that made his mother’s day.
“My mum is a simple person who does not get surprises like these every day, and on top of it, especially from the King and Queen.
“This is who our King is, just like his late father, Sultan Ahmad Shah. Our King can so easily step out of the royal court to be among us, as one of us,” said George, a former sports journalist.
Kamala’s absorbing story of family bonds, about love, sacrifice, gratitude and kindness was featured in FMT on Monday.
Her entire life has revolved around her devotion to children, as a mother of 11, grandmother of 21, great-grandmother of 21, and as foster parent to some.
Kamala’s husband, GA Das, died from a heart attack at the age of 62 in 1972 when she was 49, leaving the homemaker to raise her children, with six of them still in school. - FMT
