Mahathir pooh-poohs Muda's solo venture

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has dampened Muda’s decision to go solo in the upcoming state elections.

The former prime minister pointed out there was no reason for the party to contest if it would not be part of the governing administration.

“If you go solo and win a few seats, what can you do?

“The purpose is to be the government. There’s no point if you’re not in the administration,” he said during a press conference in Sepang today.

On June 26, Muda announced that it will be contesting in the six state elections under its own logo.

Its president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman explained that the party will no longer be cowed by fear-mongering that going solo would only result in "splitting votes".

He affirmed that the party would leverage its own strength to introduce a fresh and transformative political narrative in Malaysia.

Subsequently, Mahathir said he is eager to meet with Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin to explain the Malay Proclamation.

“The proclamation is not in support of anyone in particular, but the Malays in general,” he added.

Mahathir-Muhyiddin collaboration?

Yesterday, it was reported that the Bersatu president will meet with Mahathir in the near future to discuss the matter.

The Malay Proclamation, Mahathir’s brainchild, was an awareness movement for the Malay masses to inform them that they had ostensibly "lost power".

The nonagenarian is focused on the proclamation’s signature campaign which he said has attracted the support of PN politicians such as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Kedah PAS chief Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Mahathir said he was willing to work with Muhyiddin again.

Similarly, Muhyiddin said that he too was ready to collaborate with Mahathir to “champion the race, religion, and country”.

This marks a significant shift in their relationship following the fallout over the Sheraton Move, which resulted in the downfall of the Mahathir-led Pakatan Harapan government three years ago. - Mkini
