Malay Proclamation signatories will not clash during polls - Dr M

All parties signatory to the pro-Malay Proclamation moved by Dr Mahathir Mohamad have agreed to work together, including during elections.

This was announced by the former prime minister earlier today after a roundtable meeting with political leaders and party representatives who supported the movement.

Mahathir told a press conference they have decided not to contest against each other in elections, and are mulling to go into the upcoming state polls together.

"... all of us agreed on the need to move forward together. This includes during elections, we will move together.

"Because we cannot do much if we do not hold (political) power," he said.

Also present during the press conference were PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Bersatu information chief Razali Idris, Muafakat Nasional chairperson Annuar Musa, Pejuang chairperson Mukhriz Mahathir, Putra president Ibrahim Ali, Arau MP Shahidan Kassim, former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar and former Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin.

Not against the non-Malays

Adding further, Mahathir stressed that the Malay Proclamation movement was not against the non-Malays, but only focused on fighting for the well-being of the Malay community who are struggling financially.

He said the movement discusses the weaknesses faced by the Malays to find ways to overcome them and agreed that they need to be united.

Asked on whether they plan to contest in the upcoming state elections, Mahathir said there is a possibility.

"We will discuss it. There is a possibility that we will contest in the state elections if we find that it is the wish of all of us."

However, the former prime minister said he will not be participating in any election, and sarcastically remarked that this was because he has become "senile". - Mkini
