PETALING JAYA: A man has claimed trial at the Melaka sessions court to assaulting his wife using a golf club, steel baton and bamboo stick, and causing her to suffer severe injuries.
Azwan Azman, who works as a cleaner at a hotel, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before judge Darmafikri Abu Adam, Sinar Harian reported.
The 32-year-old was charged with using the objects to voluntarily cause grievous hurt to his 28-year-old wife at a house at Taman Seri Telok Mas in Melaka at around 3.30am on June 19.
The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years’ jail, and a fine or whipping, on conviction.
Azwan’s lawyer, Syah Azlan Abdullah, requested that bail be set at a low sum, saying the accused’s mother was only able to put together RM4,000 for the purpose.
However, deputy public prosecutor N Sivashangari opposed bail, saying Azwan had caused serious injuries to his victim.
Darmafikri, however, allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station every month and not to contact the victim or any of the prosecution’s witnesses until the case is disposed of.
The judge set Aug 1 for further mention of the case. - FMT
