Nazri moots fixed parliamentary term to ensure stability

Ambassador to the US, Nazri Abdul Aziz, said he has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to amend the Federal Constitution to fix parliamentary terms at five years.

Speaking to Astro Awani, Nazri said he suggested this to Anwar during a meeting on Friday.

"Five years means five years. We don't want a situation where a government collapses in three years," he said.

Nazri also said that with such a law, the public can be assured that every government formed will last five years.

Among the countries with fixed election cycles - with some variations - are Germany, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden and Japan.

The former Umno MP said political instability in Malaysia was often a concern raised by investors and US politicians he met in the US.

Nazri claimed that anyone who was still trying to depose the present federal government would be going against the wishes of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"This government was formed based on Agong's decree. When His Majesty decrees so, there should be no one raising the issue of the government collapsing.

"How can any citizen go against the wishes of His Majesty?" asked Nazri.

In view of this, and the fact that there are laws discouraging defection by MPs, Nazri said the public must understand that any talk of the government collapsing was invalid. - Mkini
