Reclamation works for the Penang South Islands (PSI) project will begin on July 1, according to Gamuda Bhd.
In an announcement to Bursa Malaysia, Phase 1 of the project valued at RM3.7 billion for the creation of a 930ha island, is scheduled for completion on June 30, 2030.
Gamuda is the majority owner of SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, which is undertaking the PSI reclamation works.
The project will reshape the south of Penang island and threaten to upend the livelihood of fisherfolk in the area.
Following objections to the project, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim allowed it to proceed on condition that it be scaled down to a one-island project instead of three.
Anwar explained that the project was needed to help the economy grow and fund the island's LRT project.
After several years of delays, Putrajaya finally approved the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report for the project in May.
However, critics argued that a new EIA was needed since the project had been scaled down. - Mkini
