Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz is optimistic that his contract, which will be expiring at the end of this month, would likely be renewed.
Taufik said he did not receive any dissent or displeasure from the shareholders regarding his contract renewal.
“My contract… I have had no reason to believe (that it) will not be extended, there are indications that there will be an extension.
“I do not have any reason, at this juncture, to believe that there should not be any extension,” he said at an editors’ briefing on Tuesday.
Nonetheless, Taufik said that ultimately, the decision to renew the contract is at the discretion of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
In June 2020, then-prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced the appointment of Taufik as the national oil firm’s president and group CEO.
Effective July 1, 2020, Taufik replaced his predecessor Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin - who had been appointed as the new Malaysian Airlines Bhd chairperson.
