Selangor Perikatan Nasional chief Azmin Ali has “declared” that the state will dissolve its legislative assembly on June 19.
“There’s no need to wait for (Selangor Menteri Besar) Amirudin (Shari) to announce it, let me announce it now.
“If the state elections are announced to be held at the beginning or mid of August, God willing, PN will form a new government in Selangor,” Azmin said in his speech at PN’s campaign programme held in Tanjong Karang, Selangor last night.
This came before news of Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah giving his consent to dissolve the state legislative assembly.
On May 15, Amirudin was reported as saying that he would meet the state ruler in the third week of June to request the dissolution of the state assembly.
The Selangor state assembly is set to dissolve automatically on June 25.
Among others who were present at the ceramah were PAS election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar, Bersatu Women chief Rina Harun, Selangor Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari, Kapar MP Dr Halimah Ali and Pendang MP Awang Solahuddin Hashim.
Over 4,000 supporters from all walks of life, the majority of them donning PN shirts, flooded the PAS Complex to hear the words of the coalition’s leaders.
‘Unnatural’ govt
Meanwhile, Azmin described the looming state election as “special”, asserting that it is used as the people’s referendum to express their anger towards the “kerajaan luar tabii” (“unnatural” government).
“We have heard of promises made by the ‘Madani’ leader (Anwar Ibrahim). Father of lies!
“In his campaigns before this, he (Anwar) would say, ’If I form the government and become the prime minister today, the price of petrol will be reduced tomorrow’.
“He is now the prime minister and has formed the government. But the petrol price has not gone down,” he bemoaned.
Azmin also did not mince his words when he took his former mentor-turned-rival Anwar’s administration to task over several pressing matters pertaining to the country’s economy.
“Problems involving inflation, cost of living, fall of the ringgit, increase in the overnight policy rate and economy have not been solved.
“If we look at what the economists (have said), in writing, there are two factors that have caused the rise in inflation rate and the fall of the ringgit.
“First, there isn’t a comprehensive economic policy and secondly, the economy minister and the government have weak economic and financial leadership.
“Therefore, the term that I would use is a failed government,” he stressed.
In 2008, Anwar made a promise to the public that the coalition of opposition parties he led at the time would reduce fuel prices once they get the people's mandate to lead the country.
In July last year, the Pakatan Harapan chairperson once again repeated his controversial promise to reduce the price of petrol in Malaysia a day after he comes to power.
‘What are you waiting for, Noh?’
Earlier in his speech, Azmin also teased Noh, questioning why the latter has yet to join Bersatu when his daughter Nurul Syazwani has done so.
“So, what are you waiting for? The daughter has joined (Bersatu), what is the father (Noh) waiting for?
“The ‘old house’ (Umno) is not only in flames, but it has been wrecked. So, can I announce it now? It’s okay, he has his strategy.”
Umno had sacked Noh in January for purportedly violating the party constitution.
Noh, who was Umno’s Selangor chief, subsequently declared he would contest in the upcoming Selangor state polls under the PN ticket.
However, he did not reveal which party he would represent.
PN comprises three component parties, namely Bersatu, PAS, and Gerakan.
On April 28, it was reported that Noh's daughter, Nurul Syazwani, is expected to run for a Selangor seat on Bersatu's ticket in the upcoming state polls. - Mkini
