Selangor's economic contribution proof of administration's efficiency - Amirudin

Selangor's recently announced highest-ever contribution to the country's economic growth is evidence of the state administration’s good planning, said caretaker Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

"It shows our excellent track record. We have plans in place to ensure Selangor remains a major economic player.

"Consistency also matters. This (the contribution) did not happen overnight. It has been high since 2018, 2019, then plunged slightly in 2020, went up again in 2021, and in 2022, we are still one of the biggest contributors," Amirudin (above, left) told reporters today.

He was asked to comment on Selangor Perikatan Nasional chairperson Azmin Ali’s claims that the state's economic performance plunged under Amirudin's leadership.

Azmin served as Selangor menteri besar from 2014 until 2018.

According to the Statistics Department’s (DOSM) newly released data on Malaysia’s GDP contribution according to each state in 2022, Selangor recorded its highest-ever contribution to the country's economy, with 25.5 percent, compared to 24.8 percent the previous year.

Apart from being the biggest driver of Malaysia’s economic growth last year, the state's economy also grew faster than the national economy at 11.9 percent last year, compared to the national rate of 8.7 percent.

'For political mileage'

Elaborating, Amirudin said that Azmin should also look at other factors that come into play, such as the employment and pay rate offered in the state, which he said was "higher than anywhere else".

"It is unfortunate that Azmin has resorted to dishonesty for political mileage," he retorted.

Amirudin was also asked about Kota Raja Umno’s call for Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to be fielded as the candidate for the Sungai Kandis state seat in the upcoming Selangor polls.

He said the matter was still "under discussion" and has not been finalised.

"It does not involve Pakatan Harapan. It is up to Umno and BN to discuss and sort out the matter.

"(Seat) negotiations are not yet complete. After Hari Raya Haji, we hope to discuss in depth before revealing (the details)."

Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz

In lobbying for Tengku Zafrul yesterday, Kota Raja Umno vice-chief Abdul Raof Mokhtar said the former was an ideal candidate as he has a clear vision that can bring positive changes.
