A pro-Palestine group has urged parties to stop comparing the situation of Malays in Penang to the plight of Palestinians.
“The statement is not only wrong historically, but it is also hazardous because it underestimates the cruelty that has happened to the Palestinians for more than seven decades and continues to this day,” Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions Malaysia (BDS Malaysia) said in a statement today.
While the statement does not name PAS, it came after the party drew parallels between Malay land ownership in Penang and the plight of Palestinians under Zionist occupation.
It claimed Penang had “systematically” taken control of areas that were predominantly Malay-Muslim.
Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim rebuked the statement, pointing out the state government’s efforts to assist the Malay community in the state.
Meanwhile, BDS Malaysia said Palestinians are facing a form of “settler-colonialism” where foreigners from Europe colonised Palestinian land and committed various atrocities.
These include killing its people including women, children, and the elderly, destroying their homes, seizing their land, and driving them out to become refugees.
“It should also be noted that the killing of innocent Palestinians, the destruction of their homes, the imprisonment of thousands of Palestinians, and the forcible seizure of land continue to this day.
“Any attempt to equate the Palestinians' plight with the Malays in Malaysia for political purposes is regrettable and should cease immediately,” it said. - Mkini
