A DAP leader has slammed Gerakan president Dominic Lau for comparing Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin and other leaders of the coalition to ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who was known for his patriotism.
According to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, the abominable comparison not only lacks insight but also exhibits a "blatant disregard" for the legacy and significance of Qu Yuan's contributions.
"It is evident that Dominic Lau lacks a deep understanding of the historical context surrounding Qu Yuan's era.
"By equating the political opportunists who orchestrated the 'Sheraton Move' - with absolute impunity, to betray the people's mandate and topple a democratically elected Pakatan Harapan government - with Qu Yuan, who tragically sacrificed himself upon learning of the fall of the Chu Empire, Lau has demonstrated a fundamentally flawed misunderstanding of the difference between national traitors and national patriots," Kok (above, left) said in a statement.
She was responding to Lau's remark in conjunction with the Dragon Boat Festival yesterday, comparing the tribulations of PN leaders to those experienced by Qu Yuan.
Noting how Qu Yuan was “sacrificed because of a political conspiracy”, Lau (above) claimed there were numerous similarities between the fallen patriot and the alleged victimisation of PN leaders.
Rudderless boat
Elaborating, Kok said that while Gerakan had in the past boasted of capable, visionary leaders, it is currently led by Lau who has "lost touch" with the party's true principles.
"Lau has now become a pathetic apologist for Bersatu and PAS leaders, willingly defending the indefensible. In doing so, he has committed a grave and unforgivable error by attempting to draw a parallel between PN leaders and the esteemed poet Qu Yuan.
"In essence, Lau's vision appears limited, akin to stopping at the tip of the dragon's tail on the aimless and rudderless boat he sails," Kok said.
She urged Lau to study the history of Qu Yuan to truly embrace the spirit of righteousness that the poet's actions embody.
"It is crucial that he (Lau) refrains from making further embarrassing and unfortified statements in his desperate attempt to prove his loyalty and fealty to his political masters.
"The jury is out. Let Malaysians judge him accordingly." - Mkini
