PETALING JAYA: A student at a public university has been arrested over a robbery at an IT shop in Teluk Intan, Perak, two months ago.

Seventy iPhones were stolen and a security guard slashed with an axe in the incident.

Hilir Perak police chief Ahmad Adnan Basri said the 21-year-old man was arrested at a condominium in Jalan Perda Barat, Bukit Mertajam, in Penang yesterday at noon.

Police seized 23 iPhones, an Apple watch, an iPad, two Samsung styluses, RM853 in cash and a Proton Wira, according to Berita Harian.

“The suspect has a previous criminal conviction but tested negative for drugs,” said Adnan.

He said the suspect is still studying at a public university in Penang and had confessed to the crime. He also claimed to have no accomplices.

“The suspect is being remanded for four days until Saturday. The case is being probed under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt when committing a robbery, which is punishable with 20 years’ jail and whipping.”

On April 3, a man armed with an axe slashed a security guard on the head, locked him up in a toilet and made off with 70 iPhones from a commercial complex in Teluk Intan.

The suspect had broken into the phone shop at Kompleks Menara Condong Teluk Intan and stolen the iPhones, valued at RM300,000.

The 60-year-old guard had been resting at the complex’s toilet counter when the axeman approached him. - FMT
